A little about me
Originally from Bellingham Washington, I attended Sehome High School where I played both basketball and baseball. I graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture and a Minor in Landscape Architecture from University of Oregon in June of 2021. Growing up in Bellingham, I spent my childhood running about in the forests of Chuckanut Mountain and playing whiffle-ball with my neighbors during the beautiful Northwest summers. I have had the privilege of traveling to destinations such as Eastern China, Southern England, Guatemala, Canada, and throughout the US. These experiences have fueled an on-going curiosity and appreciation for history and culture, particularly when it comes to my Scottish and Irish heritage. During my free time I enjoy listening to music, watching movies, spending time with family and friends, and cheering on my favorite sports teams.
Relevant Experience
I have had opportunities to gain experience in fields related to both architecture and construction. During two summers of building and renovating custom homes I learned many technical skills. I learned how to tie rebar for both ICF walls and cast-in-place foundations. I learned how to mix and pour concrete. I learned how to disassemble and salvage materials. I learned how to frame walls, install pre-engineered trusses, cut and fasten roof sheathing, stain custom cabinetry, and finish carpentry. Kent Chasson and Adam Wilson both broadened my perspective on building and craftsmanship, but also gave me so much respect for the hard work, problem solving ability, and attention to detail that it takes to be a builder. During two summers at Greg Robinson Architect my primary role was drafting, but I also attended client meetings, site visits, and took measurements for as-builts, collaborating closely with Greg. Learning about client interaction and the on-site role of an architect gave me great insight into the range of skills an architect needs in order to be successful as both a designer and a business owner.
Why Design?
My love for design has always been inspired by the natural beauty I have been so privileged to enjoy here in the Northwest. My goal as a designer would be to do what I can, to both preserve that beauty and share it with others. This admiration for my natural surroundings inspired me to pursue a Minor in Landscape Architecture which has been an invaluable part of my learning, challenging me to integrate my work into its surroundings, not only to better serve people, but also the quality of the place itself. I see design as my opportunity to have a positive impact in the world, particularly when it comes to meeting the challenges we face in terms of climate change. I am also inspired by the potential of design to address social justice, connecting people to each other and building partnerships across cultures. I think design can be a powerful change agent, leading the way to a more sustainable and equitable future, and that is something I want to be a part of.
