A K-5 Elementary STEAM [Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math] school located in central Portland, to be part of the Portland Public School District. The facility addresses the city's need for more elementary schools within the central west side, a neighborhood in which a new school has not been built in over 70 years. Located on the downtown US Post Office site, just west of Union Station and north of the North Park Blocks, the school anchors a prominent urban design project that would connect the newly developed Pearl District to Old Town with a potential continuation of the park blocks toward the river. These determining factors present the challenge of designing a secure learning place that also acts as a community catalyst, in a dense urban environment, supporting a STEAM curriculum, and adopting the idea that the architecture of the school itself acts as Reggio Emilia's "third teacher": the building as a teacher.
